Before The Daily Show, Noah was a popular stand-up comedian in South Africa and hosted programmes on South African television. Trevor Noah’s Early Life & Background
Trevor Noah was born on February 20, 1984, in Johannesburg, South Africa, to Patricia Nombuyiselo Noah, a Xhosa woman, and Robert Noah, a Swiss-German man. Under apartheid, their relationship was illegal, and Noah was born, in his own words, “a crime”. He was raised mainly in Soweto by his mother and his grandmother, and attended Maryvale College, a private Catholic school in Johannesburg.
As a teenager, Noah began performing stand-up comedy in Johannesburg clubs and appeared on South African television. He hosted the dating show Take Your Shoes Off and the radio show Noah’s Ark, and by his mid-20s he was one of South Africa’s best-known comedians, performing in the United States and Britain as well.
Trevor Noah’s Career
Noah’s international breakthrough came in 2014, when he appeared as a correspondent on The Daily Show in the United States. In 2015 he succeeded Jon Stewart as host, becoming the first South African and the first person born in Africa to host a major American late-night show. He hosted the programme for seven years, winning a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Short Form Variety Series and a Peabody Award, and left in December 2022.
His memoir Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood, published in 2016, was a bestseller and won the Thurber Prize for American Humor. He has hosted the Grammy Awards in 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, released the Netflix specials Afraid of the Dark (2017) and Son of Patricia (2018), and hosts the podcast What Now? with Trevor Noah.
