Who Is Conan O’Brien?
Conan O’Brien is an American television host, comedian, writer and producer who hosted Late Night with Conan O’Brien on NBC from 1993 to 2009, The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien in 2009 and 2010, and Conan on TBS from 2010 to 2021. Known for his tall, lanky presence, his absurd humour and his willingness to mock himself, he is one of the most distinctive late-night hosts of his generation.
Before hosting, O’Brien was a writer on Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons, where he wrote the acclaimed episode “Marge vs. the Monorail”. Since leaving the nightly talk show, he has hosted the popular podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend and the travel series Conan O’Brien Must Go.
Conan O’Brien’s Early Life & Background
Conan Christopher O’Brien was born on April 18, 1963, in Brookline, Massachusetts, to Thomas Francis O’Brien, a physician and epidemiologist, and Ruth Reardon O’Brien, a lawyer. He grew up in Brookline, attended Brookline High School and studied history and literature at Harvard University, where he was president of the Harvard Lampoon comedy magazine and wrote for the Harvard Crimson.
After graduating from Harvard in 1985, O’Brien moved to Los Angeles to write for the HBO sketch show Not Necessarily the News. He was hired as a writer for Saturday Night Live in 1988, then joined The Simpsons as a writer and producer in 1991, before being chosen — to the surprise of many — to succeed David Letterman as host of Late Night on NBC in 1993.
Conan O’Brien’s Career
Late Night with Conan O’Brien ran from 1993 to 2009, developing a loyal following for its surreal comedy, including the Masturbating Bear, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and O’Brien’s mock interviews with celebrities. In 2009, he succeeded Jay Leno as host of The Tonight Show, but after seven months, NBC moved Leno back to late night, and O’Brien left in a widely publicised dispute, with a $45 million settlement.
O’Brien then launched Conan on TBS, which ran from 2010 to 2021, and began the podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend in 2018, which became one of the most popular comedy podcasts in the world. He has hosted the Emmy Awards and, in 2025, hosted the Academy Awards, and he received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2025.
