Who Is Harrison Ford?
Harrison Ford is an American actor who became a movie legend playing two of cinema’s most enduring heroes: the rogue smuggler Han Solo in Star Wars and the whip-cracking archaeologist Indiana Jones. One of the most successful actors of all time, his films have grossed more than $9 billion worldwide, and at one stage he held a record for starring in five of the 30 highest-grossing films ever made. He has been nominated for an Academy Award, two Emmy Awards, five Golden Globe Awards and two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and he has received the AFI Life Achievement Award, the Cecil B. DeMille Award and the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award.
Ford’s career is unusual in Hollywood: he did not become a star until he was 35, and before that he worked as a carpenter to support his family. George Lucas hired him to build cabinets at his home, then cast him in American Graffiti (1973), and four years later Star Wars made him a global icon. He is also a licensed pilot who has flown rescue missions, and an environmental activist who has served as vice-chair of the board of Conservation International.
Early Life & Background
Harrison Ford was born on July 13, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, to Christopher Ford, an advertising executive and former radio actor, and Dorothy Nidelman, a former radio actress. He grew up in the Chicago suburb of Park Ridge, where he attended Maine East High School, and went on to Ripon College in Wisconsin, where he studied English and philosophy. In his senior year, he took a drama class to overcome shyness and discovered acting.
After college, Ford moved to Los Angeles in 1964 with his first wife, Mary Marquardt. He signed with Columbia Pictures’ New Talent program in 1966, earning $150 a week, and made his uncredited film debut as a bellhop in Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round. After small roles in Luv and Journey to Shiloh, he was dropped by the studio, and he took up carpentry to support his growing family. While building cabinets for George Lucas, he read lines with actors auditioning for Star Wars, and Lucas cast him as Han Solo.
Career
Ford’s breakthrough came in 1977, when Star Wars became a phenomenon and Han Solo became one of the most famous characters in film history. He followed it with The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983), and then with Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), the first Indiana Jones film, directed by Steven Spielberg. He played the fedora-wearing archaeologist in five films over 42 years, most recently Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023). Between the two franchises, he also starred in the sci-fi classic Blade Runner (1982) and its sequel Blade Runner 2049 (2017).
Ford earned his only Academy Award nomination for Witness (1985), in which he played a Philadelphia detective hiding among the Amish. His 1990s hits included Patriot Games (1992) and its sequel Clear and Present Danger (1994), in which he played CIA analyst Jack Ryan; The Fugitive (1993), one of the biggest films of the decade; and Air Force One (1997), in which he played the President of the United States. His later work includes 42 (2013), as Brooklyn Dodgers executive Branch Rickey, and a celebrated late-career move to television, starring in Yellowstone’s 1923 (2022–2025), for which he earned an Emmy nomination, and the comedy series Shrinking (2023– ), for which he earned another. In 2025, he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in Captain America: Brave New World.
