Who Is Chris Pratt?
Chris Pratt is an American actor whose career changed dramatically in 2014, when he went from playing a lovable goofball on television to headlining two of the year’s biggest films. His combination of humour, physical comedy and action-hero presence made him one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, and he has since led franchises, voiced animated characters and moved into dramatic television.
Like Dwayne Johnson, Pratt made the leap from a lighter, comedy-led career into action blockbusters, building a physique and a screen persona to match. His rise also echoes that of George Clooney, who moved from a long-running television role into film stardom, although Pratt’s breakthrough came far faster once the right roles arrived.
Chris Pratt’s Early Life & Background
Chris Pratt was born on June 21, 1979, in Virginia, Minnesota, and raised in Lake Stevens, Washington, where his family moved when he was seven. His mother, Kathleen, worked in a grocery store, and his father, Daniel, worked in mining and later in home remodelling. He attended Lake Stevens High School, where he played American football and took part in school plays.
After briefly attending community college, Pratt moved to Maui, Hawaii, where he worked as a waiter and lived in a van and a tent on the beach. He was discovered there by actress Rae Dawn Chong, who cast him in her directorial debut, Cursed Part 3. He moved to Los Angeles and soon won a regular role on the WB drama Everwood, followed by a recurring part on The O.C.
Chris Pratt’s Career
Pratt’s best-known early role was Andy Dwyer on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, which he played from 2009 to 2015. Originally written as a guest part, Andy became a series regular, and Pratt’s improvisational comedy made him a fan favourite. During that time he also appeared in films including Moneyball (2011) and Zero Dark Thirty (2012), showing a dramatic side to his work.
His breakthrough as a film star came in 2014 with two hits: The Lego Movie, in which he voiced Emmet, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, in which he played Star-Lord alongside Vin Diesel, who voiced Groot. The following year he headlined Jurassic World, which became one of the highest-grossing films of all time. He went on to star in Avengers films, The Terminal List on Prime Video, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
