Who Is Cooper Hoffman?
Cooper Hoffman is an American actor whose first film role made him one of the most talked-about young actors in Hollywood. He made his acting debut with the leading role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza (2021), playing Gary Valentine, a teenage actor and entrepreneur in 1970s Los Angeles, and the performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. He followed that with a supporting role in Ethan Hawke’s Flannery O’Connor biopic Wildcat (2023), played television executive Dick Ebersol in Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night (2024) and took the lead role of Ray Garraty in Francis Lawrence’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Long Walk (2025).
Hoffman is the son of the late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman and costume designer Mimi O’Donnell, and his uncle is the screenwriter Gordy Hoffman. He made his stage debut in 2025 in the off-Broadway production of Sam Shepard’s Curse of the Starving Class. Like fellow young actors Drew Starkey and Harris Dickinson, Hoffman has moved quickly from a breakthrough film role into leading-man territory — and, like them, he has kept his personal life largely private while building a career on strong, character-led performances.
Cooper Hoffman’s Early Life & Background
Cooper Alexander Hoffman was born on March 20, 2003, in New York City, the son of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman and costume designer Mimi O’Donnell. He has two younger sisters. His father died when he was 10 years old. Despite growing up around the film industry — Paul Thomas Anderson, a frequent collaborator of his father’s, was a family friend — he did not seriously consider becoming an actor while growing up. His only involvement in school plays was as stage crew, and he made short films with friends, including Anderson’s son Jack.
He is in a relationship with his Poetic License co-star Nico Parker. The two met while filming the movie and reportedly fell in love; several weeks after filming ended, Parker visited Hoffman in New York, where she met his mother. He confirmed the relationship in August 2026, revealing the sweet moment he asked her to be his girlfriend.
Cooper Hoffman’s Career
Hoffman’s acting debut came in 2021, when he was cast as Gary Valentine in Licorice Pizza, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, a frequent collaborator of his father’s. The film follows Gary, a teenage actor and entrepreneur, as he falls for Alana Kane, played by Alana Haim, in the San Fernando Valley in the early 1970s. Hoffman’s performance was critically acclaimed, and he was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, won the National Board of Review award for Breakthrough Performance and the Florida Film Critics Circle’s Pauline Kael Breakout Award, and was nominated for the Critics’ Choice award for Best Young Performer.
In 2023 he appeared in Wildcat, Ethan Hawke’s biopic of the writer Flannery O’Connor, which premiered at the 50th Telluride Film Festival, and in 2024 he played Dick Ebersol, the NBC executive who helped create Saturday Night Live, in Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night, which dramatised the 90 minutes leading up to the show’s first broadcast in 1975. His most important role so far came in 2025, when he played Ray Garraty, the lead character in Francis Lawrence’s adaptation of Stephen King’s 1979 novel The Long Walk, in which 50 teenage boys take part in a deadly walking contest. Hoffman has said he related his character’s grief over the loss of his father to his own experience of losing his father at 10, and the film earned him the Independent Spirit Robert Altman Award.
Also in 2025, he played Ari Zimmer in Poetic License, Maude Apatow’s feature directorial debut, alongside Andrew Barth Feldman and Leslie Mann, and made his stage debut as Wesley Tate in the off-Broadway production of Sam Shepard’s Curse of the Starving Class with The New Group. His upcoming projects include the erotic thriller I Want Your Sex (2026), in which he plays Elliot for director Gregg Araki, Artificial (2026), in which he plays Greg Brockman, and The Chaperones (2027). In June 2026 it was announced that he would star in the Hulu drama pilot Durango, with Kathryn Newton set to star opposite him.
