Ringo Starr’s Early Life & Background
Richard Starkey was born on July 7, 1940, in the Dingle area of Liverpool, England, to Richard Starkey, a baker, and Elsie Gleave. He had a difficult childhood, spending long periods in hospital with appendicitis and pleurisy, and left school at 15 to work as an apprentice joiner and then as a machinist.
Starkey began playing drums in a local band, the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group, and joined Rory Storm and the Hurricanes in 1959, adopting the stage name Ringo Starr because of the rings he wore and to give the band’s name a cowboy feel. In August 1962, he was invited to join the Beatles, replacing their original drummer, Pete Best.
Ringo Starr’s Career
With the Beatles, Starr played on every album from Please Please Me (1963) to Let It Be (1970), and his drumming became known for its feel, simplicity and musicality. He also acted in the band’s films, including A Hard Day’s Night (1964) and Help! (1965), and narrated the children’s television series Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends.
After the Beatles, Starr released the solo albums Sentimental Journey (1970) and Ringo (1973), which included the hits “Photograph” and “You’re Sixteen”. He has toured with Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band since 1989, performing with a rotating cast of musicians, and he continues to record and tour into his 80s. He was knighted in 2018 for services to music.
