Who Is Sylvester Stallone?

Sylvester Stallone is an American actor, director, screenwriter and producer best known for creating and starring in the Rocky and Rambo film franchises, two of the most successful series in cinema history. He wrote the screenplay for Rocky in three days after watching the 1975 fight between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner, and he refused to sell the script unless he could play the lead role, a gamble that paid off when the film won the Academy Award for Best Picture and earned him nominations for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay.

He went on to play John Rambo in First Blood in 1982 and its sequels, becoming the defining action hero of the 1980s alongside his friend and rival Arnold Schwarzenegger, with whom he later co-starred in The Expendables films. After a quieter period, he enjoyed a major comeback as Rocky Balboa in Creed in 2015, winning a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, and he now stars in the Paramount+ crime series Tulsa King. He has been married to Jennifer Flavin since 1997, and the couple’s family life was the subject of the reality series The Family Stallone.

Sylvester Stallone’s Early Life & Background

Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone was born on July 6, 1946, in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan, New York City. His father, Francesco Stallone, was a hairdresser, and his mother, Jacqueline Labofish, was an astrologer and dancer. He was born with nerve damage to the left side of his face, the result of forceps used during his delivery, which left him with a drooping eyelid and lip and the slurred speech that became his trademark. He grew up in Maryland and Washington, D.C., and later in Philadelphia, where he attended high school at Notre Dame Academy and Lincoln High School.

He studied drama at the University of Miami, leaving before graduating to pursue acting in New York City, where he struggled for years, taking small parts in off-Broadway plays and films. His first film role was in the low-budget adult film The Party at Kitty and Stud’s in 1970, for which he was paid $200. He later appeared in small roles in films such as The Lords of Flatbush in 1974, before the Ali-Wepner fight in 1975 inspired him to write Rocky, a script about a down-on-his-luck Philadelphia boxer given a shot at the heavyweight title.

Sylvester Stallone’s Career

Rocky, released in 1976, was made for around $1 million and grossed more than $225 million worldwide, winning the Academy Award for Best Picture and earning Stallone nominations for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay. He wrote and starred in the sequels Rocky II in 1979, Rocky III in 1982, Rocky IV in 1985 and Rocky V in 1990, then returned to the role in Rocky Balboa in 2006. His other hits of the 1980s and 1990s included Cobra in 1986, Tango & Cash in 1989, Demolition Man in 1993, Cliffhanger in 1993, The Specialist in 1994 and Judge Dredd in 1995. He earned praise for his dramatic performance in Cop Land in 1997, then launched The Expendables franchise in 2010, directing and starring alongside Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and Jason Statham. His performance as an ageing Rocky mentoring Adonis Creed in Creed in 2015 won him the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor and an Academy Award nomination, his first in nearly 40 years.
