Who Is Salma Hayek?

Salma Hayek is a Mexican-American actress and producer who became one of the first Latina stars to headline major Hollywood films. She was already a telenovela star in Mexico when she moved to Los Angeles in 1991, and her breakthrough came with Robert Rodriguez’s Desperado (1995), opposite Antonio Banderas. She went on to star in From Dusk till Dawn (1996), Wild Wild West (1999) and the comedy Dogma (1999), but her defining work is Frida (2002), the biopic of artist Frida Kahlo that she spent seven years bringing to the screen as producer and star, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Hayek has also been a force behind the camera as an executive producer of the hit series Ugly Betty, and in recent years she has joined the Marvel universe in Eternals (2021) and starred in House of Gucci (2021) and Magic Mike’s Last Dance (2023).

Salma Hayek’s Early Life & Background

Hayek was born in Coatzacoalcos, a port city in the Mexican state of Veracruz, to Sami Hayek Domínguez, a Lebanese-Mexican oil company executive, and Diana Jiménez Medina, an opera singer and talent scout of Spanish descent. She was raised in a wealthy Catholic family and, at 12, was sent to the Academy of the Sacred Heart school in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. Diagnosed with dyslexia as a child, she returned to Mexico and studied international relations at Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, but left before graduating to pursue acting. Her first television role came in the series Un Nuevo Amanecer (1988), and she became a star across Latin America in the telenovela Teresa (1989). In 1991 she gave it all up to move to Los Angeles, where she spoke little English and had to start from scratch — a gamble that would take several years to pay off.

Later film hits included the Grown Ups comedies (2010, 2013), Savages (2012) and The Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017).
