Early Life & Background

Michael Gerard Tyson was born on June 30, 1966, in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in the tough Brownsville neighbourhood, where he was frequently in trouble as a child. At the age of 13, he was sent to the Tryon School for Boys, a reform school in upstate New York, where his boxing talent was spotted by Bobby Stewart, a former boxer who worked there. Stewart introduced Tyson to the legendary trainer Cus D’Amato, who became his mentor and legal guardian, and D’Amato shaped the young Tyson into a fighter, teaching him the peek-a-boo style that would make him famous.

Tyson’s mother died when he was 16, and D’Amato died in 1985, a year before Tyson won his first world title, losses that haunted him for the rest of his life. He turned professional in March 1985 at the age of 18, winning his first 19 fights by knockout, 12 of them in the first round, and he became the most feared fighter in the sport before he was old enough to drink legally.

Career

Tyson won his first world title in November 1986, beating Trevor Berbick to become the youngest heavyweight champion in history at the age of 20. Within a year, he had unified the division, holding the WBA, WBC and IBF titles, and he reigned as the undisputed world heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990. His speed, power and aggression made him a global star, and he defended his titles nine times before his reign ended in one of the greatest upsets in boxing history, a 10th-round knockout by James “Buster” Douglas in Tokyo in February 1990.

In 1992, Tyson was convicted of rape and sentenced to six years in prison, serving three years before his release in 1995. He returned to boxing and regained the WBA and WBC titles, but in 1997, in his rematch with Evander Holyfield, he was disqualified for biting Holyfield’s ear, an incident that led to his licence being revoked. He retired in 2005 with a record of 50 wins and 6 losses, and in 2003 he filed for bankruptcy, having earned more than $300 million in his career. In November 2024, at the age of 58, he returned to the ring for a professional fight against Jake Paul, losing by unanimous decision in a bout watched by millions.

In retirement, Tyson reinvented himself as an entertainer and entrepreneur. He appeared in the hit film “The Hangover” in 2009, starred in the animated series “Mike Tyson Mysteries”, performed his one-man show “Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth” on Broadway and launched the Tyson Ranch cannabis company and his podcast, “Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson”. He has been married to Lakiha Spicer since 2009, and he has eight children. His daughter Exodus died in a tragic accident in 2009 at the age of four. Like Michael Jordan, Tyson showed that a sporting career can become a global brand, and that even the most turbulent lives can find a second act.
