Who Is Megan Fox?

Megan Fox is an American actress and author who became one of the most recognisable faces in Hollywood in the late 2000s. She broke through as Mikaela Banes, the mechanically gifted love interest in Michael Bay’s Transformers (2007), a film that grossed more than $700 million worldwide, and she returned for the sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), which took in $836 million. In the same period she starred in the horror comedy Jennifer’s Body (2009), a film that was dismissed on release but has since been reassessed as a cult classic and one of her most recognisable roles.

Fox has spent her career moving between studio franchises and independent film, with credits that include the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films, the sitcom New Girl, the thriller Till Death (2021) and the science-fiction film Subservience (2024). In 2023 she published her first book, the poetry collection Pretty Boys Are Poisonous, which became a New York Times bestseller. Like Mila Kunis, who also grew up on television before becoming a film star, Fox has balanced a long screen career with work as a producer and author.

Megan Fox’s Early Life & Background

Megan Denise Fox was born on May 16, 1986, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to Gloria Darlene and Franklin Thomas Fox. She spent her early childhood in Rockwood, Tennessee, and her parents divorced when she was three years old; she was raised by her mother and her stepfather, Tony Tonachio. She grew up in a strict religious household, attending Catholic school for 12 years, and she began dance and drama training at the age of five in Kingston, Tennessee.

When Fox was 10, the family moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, and at 13 she began modelling after winning several awards at the 1999 American Modeling and Talent Convention in Hilton Head, South Carolina. She attended Morningside Academy in Port St. Lucie and then St. Lucie West Centennial High School, and at the age of 17 she tested out of school through correspondence so she could move to Los Angeles and pursue acting full time.

Megan Fox’s Career

Fox made her screen debut in the 2001 direct-to-video film Holiday in the Sun, playing Brianna Wallace opposite Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, and she followed it with guest roles on What I Like About You and Two and a Half Men and an uncredited appearance as an extra in Bad Boys II (2003). Her first theatrical feature was Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen (2004), in which she played Carla Santini opposite Lindsay Lohan, and the same year she joined the ABC sitcom Hope & Faith as Sydney Shanowski, remaining with the show for its second and third seasons. Her breakthrough came in 2007, when director Michael Bay cast her as Mikaela Banes in Transformers. The film made her an international celebrity, and she reprised the role in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in 2009. She did not return for the third film after a public falling-out with Bay, but the two later reconciled professionally when he produced her Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films.

In 2009 Fox starred in the horror comedy Jennifer’s Body, written by Diablo Cody and directed by Karyn Kusama, playing Jennifer Check, a high school cheerleader who becomes possessed by a demon. The film earned only $31 million on release and received mixed reviews, but later critics and audiences reassessed it as a feminist horror comedy that had been misunderstood, and it is now one of her defining roles, with a sequel in production. She followed it with Jonah Hex (2010), a cameo in The Dictator (2012) and a role in This Is 40 (2012) alongside Paul Rudd, and she hosted Saturday Night Live in 2009. In 2014 she returned to major studio filmmaking as reporter April O’Neil in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which grossed $493 million worldwide, and she reprised the role in the 2016 sequel. She also showed her comic side on the Fox sitcom New Girl, playing Reagan Lucas across 15 episodes in 2016 and 2017, stepping in while Zooey Deschanel was on maternity leave.

In recent years Fox has worked steadily across film and television. She appeared in the independent films Above the Shadows (2019), Zeroville (2019) and The Battle of Jangsari (2019), starred in the action thriller Rogue (2020), the family comedy Think Like a Dog (2020) and the thriller Midnight in the Switchgrass (2021), and led the survival thriller Till Death (2021). She appeared alongside Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone in Expend4bles (2023), covered the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 2023, voiced Nitara in the video game Mortal Kombat 1 (2023) and starred as Alice, a lifelike artificial-intelligence android, in Subservience (2024). In November 2023 she published her first book, the poetry collection Pretty Boys Are Poisonous, which became a New York Times bestseller. In 2025 she appeared in the Prime Video comedy series Overcompensating and voiced Toy Chica in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, and she is filming a sequel to Jennifer’s Body, returning as Jennifer Check alongside Amanda Seyfried, set for 2027. She has also supported the charity Generosity Water, funding more than ten water wells in developing countries.
