Early Life & Background

John Felix Anthony Cena was born on April 23, 1977, in West Newbury, Massachusetts. He attended Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and went on to Springfield College, where he earned a degree in exercise physiology and kinesiology and played college football. After graduating, he worked as a limousine driver while pursuing bodybuilding, a path that led him to professional wrestling.

Cena began training as a wrestler in California and made his professional debut on November 5, 1999, for Ultimate Pro Wrestling, where he performed as The Prototype. His size, athleticism and charisma quickly drew WWE’s attention, and he signed a developmental contract in 2001.

Career & Journey

Cena made his WWE main roster debut on June 27, 2002, answering an open challenge from Kurt Angle and declaring that he possessed “ruthless aggression,” a phrase that became his calling card. He soon adopted the “Doctor of Thuganomics” persona, a trash-talking rapper, and won his first WWE Championship at WrestleMania 21 in 2005 by defeating John “Bradshaw” Layfield.

Over the next two decades, Cena became the face of WWE. He headlined WrestleMania multiple times, feuded with stars including Edge, Randy Orton, The Rock and CM Punk, and collected a record 17 world championships. Along the way, he released the 2005 rap album You Can’t See Me and built a parallel career in Hollywood, moving from action films into comedy and franchise blockbusters.

Cena announced a retirement tour for 2025 and wrestled his final match on December 13, 2025, at Saturday Night’s Main Event XLII, losing to Gunther. He remained with WWE as a brand ambassador and continued to shape the product: at Backlash 2026 he announced the John Cena Classic, and on the November 2, 2026 episode of Raw he announced it again, putting his name on a tournament that will define the next generation of WWE stars.
