Who Is Cody Rhodes?
Cody Rhodes is an American professional wrestler signed to WWE, where he performs on the SmackDown brand. Known to fans as “The American Nightmare,” he is the son of WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes and the half-brother of Dustin Rhodes. After building his name in WWE, he helped launch a rival promotion, then returned to WWE in April 2022 to become one of the company’s top stars.
Early Life & Background
Rhodes was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, on June 30, 1985, and grew up in Marietta, Georgia. He attended Lassiter High School, where he was a standout amateur wrestler, winning Georgia state championships in 2003 and 2004. As a teenager he legally added his father’s famous ring surname, Rhodes, to his own name, embracing a family legacy that stretches back to one of wrestling’s most beloved figures.
Career
Rhodes first rose to prominence in WWE before leaving in 2016 to rebuild his career on the independent scene and in Japan. In 2019 he co-founded All Elite Wrestling, where he worked as both an executive vice president and a wrestler until 2022. His return to WWE in April 2022 marked the start of his most successful run, as he won the Royal Rumble in 2023 and again in 2024, becoming one of only a handful of wrestlers to win the match in consecutive years.
Rhodes went on to win the WWE Championship three times and was crowned King of the Ring in 2025. In 2026, he regained the championship for a third time on SmackDown in March, successfully defended it against Randy Orton at WrestleMania 42, and then lost it to Sami Zayn at Night of Champions in June, after which an on-screen rivalry with CM Punk began.
