Who Is Phil Collins?
Phil Collins is an English singer, drummer, songwriter and record producer who first became famous as the drummer of the progressive rock band Genesis, then as its lead singer, and later as one of the best-selling solo artists of the 1980s. His powerful, gated-reverb drum sound and his emotive, pop-rock songs made him one of the defining musicians of his era.
Collins has sold more than 150 million records worldwide, as a solo artist and with Genesis, and has won eight Grammy Awards, an Academy Award and two Golden Globes. His best-known solo songs include “In the Air Tonight”, “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)”, “One More Night”, “Sussudio” and “Another Day in Paradise”.
Phil Collins’s Early Life & Background
Philip David Charles Collins was born on January 30, 1951, in Chiswick, London, to Greville Collins, an insurance agent, and Winifred June Collins, a theatrical agent. He grew up in Hounslow, London, and attended the Barbara Speake Stage School, where he appeared as a child actor, including as an uncredited extra in the Beatles film A Hard Day’s Night and in the West End production of Oliver!
Collins began playing drums as a child and joined Genesis in 1970, at the age of 19, after answering an advertisement in Melody Maker magazine. He was the band’s drummer for five years before taking over as lead singer in 1975, following the departure of Peter Gabriel.
Phil Collins’s Career
With Genesis, Collins led the band from progressive rock to mainstream pop success, with the albums Duke (1980), Abacab (1981) and Invisible Touch (1986), which produced the US No. 1 single “Invisible Touch”. His solo debut, Face Value (1981), included the hit “In the Air Tonight”, famous for its dramatic drum fill, and his third solo album, No Jacket Required (1985), won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
Collins performed at both Live Aid concerts in London and Philadelphia in 1985, flying by Concorde between them, and won an Academy Award for “You’ll Be in My Heart”, from Disney’s Tarzan (1999). Nerve damage left him unable to play the drums, and he retired in 2011, before returning for a final Genesis tour in 2021 and 2022, with his son Nicholas Collins on drums.
