Ellen DeGeneres’s Early Life & Background
Ellen Lee DeGeneres was born on January 26, 1958, in Metairie, Louisiana, to Elliott DeGeneres, an insurance agent, and Betty Jane DeGeneres. She grew up in Metairie and Atlanta, Georgia, with her older brother Vance, and attended the University of New Orleans, leaving after one semester to work in a series of jobs, including as a waitress and a house painter.
DeGeneres began performing stand-up comedy in New Orleans clubs in the early 1980s, developing the observational, clean style that became her trademark. In 1982 she was named the Showtime network’s funniest person in America, and in 1986 she became the first female comedian invited to sit on the couch on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
