Who Is Tim Burton?
Tim Burton is an American film director, producer and artist whose distinctive gothic style has shaped popular cinema for four decades. His films often centre on lonely outsiders and misfits, set in worlds that are at once dark, whimsical and visually inventive. From Edward Scissorhands to Alice in Wonderland, his work is instantly recognisable for its striped, spiral and graveyard imagery, pale heroes and richly detailed sets.
Burton began his career as an animator at Disney before directing his first feature, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, in 1985. He went on to direct two of the most successful films of the late 1980s and early 1990s, Beetlejuice and Batman, and has continued to move between large studio blockbusters, stop-motion animation and smaller, personal projects throughout his career.
Tim Burton’s Early Life & Background
Timothy Walter Burton was born on August 25, 1958, in Burbank, California, to Bill Burton, a former minor league baseball player, and Jean Burton. He grew up in Burbank, near the Walt Disney Studios, and was a shy, creative child who spent much of his time drawing, watching horror films and making short films. He later said that his suburban upbringing, which he found stifling, helped shape the outsider characters in his work.
Burton studied character animation at the California Institute of the Arts, where his classmates included future Pixar directors. He joined Walt Disney Productions as an animator and worked on The Fox and the Hound and Tron, while making his own short films on the side. His live-action short Frankenweenie, made at Disney in 1984, and the animated short Vincent, narrated by Vincent Price, showed the gothic style that would define his career.
Tim Burton’s Career
Burton’s feature career began with Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985), followed by the comedy-horror hit Beetlejuice (1988) and Batman (1989), which became one of the highest-grossing films of its time. He then made Edward Scissorhands (1990), a fairy-tale romance starring Johnny Depp in their first collaboration, and Batman Returns (1992). His 1994 film Ed Wood, about the famously low-budget filmmaker, won two Academy Awards and is widely regarded as one of his best works.
Later films included Sleepy Hollow (1999), Big Fish (2003), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), the stop-motion Corpse Bride (2005), Sweeney Todd (2007) and the billion-dollar hit Alice in Wonderland (2010). He returned to stop-motion with Frankenweenie (2012), directed the Netflix series Wednesday, and in 2024 released Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, a long-awaited sequel that was a major box-office success.
