Elton John’s Early Life & Background

John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in Pinner, Middlesex, the only child of Stanley Dwight, a Royal Air Force officer, and Sheila Eileen. He was a piano prodigy, winning a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at 11, but he left after five years to pursue pop music. He played in the pub band Bluesology, and in 1967 he adopted his stage name from two of its members, saxophonist Elton Dean and singer Long John Baldry. The same year he answered a Liberty Records advertisement seeking songwriters and was paired with lyricist Bernie Taupin – the beginning of one of the great partnerships in music. His debut album, Empty Sky, was released in 1969, and his breakthrough came with the self-titled Elton John (1970), which included the hit “Your Song”.
