Who Is Kylie Minogue?
Kylie Minogue is an Australian pop star whose career has spanned almost four decades, from 1980s soap opera to disco-infused chart hits in the 2020s. Known as the “Princess of Pop,” she has sold more than 80 million records worldwide, won a Grammy Award and become a beloved figure in Australia and the United Kingdom, where many of her biggest hits topped the charts.
Like fellow pop star Sam Smith, Minogue has reinvented her sound and image several times, moving from bubblegum pop to dance, indie and country-influenced records without losing her audience. Her ability to return to the charts in every decade — most recently with “Padam Padam” — has made her a rare example of lasting pop longevity.
Kylie Minogue’s Early Life & Background
Kylie Minogue was born on May 28, 1968, in Melbourne, Australia, to Ronald Minogue, an accountant, and Carol Minogue, a former dancer. Both of her parents were Welsh immigrants. She grew up in Surrey Hills, Melbourne, with her younger sister, singer Dannii Minogue, and her brother, Brendan. She attended Camberwell High School, where she was already acting in local productions.
She began her acting career as a child, appearing in Australian television shows including The Sullivans and Skyways. In 1986 she was cast as Charlene Mitchell — later Charlene Robinson — in the soap opera Neighbours, a role that made her a star in Australia and Britain. Her on-screen wedding to Jason Donovan’s character, Scott Robinson, was watched by millions of viewers.
Kylie Minogue’s Career
Minogue’s music career began in 1987 with a cover of “The Loco-Motion,” which became a hit in Australia, followed by “I Should Be So Lucky,” her first UK number one, in 1988. Working with producers Stock Aitken Waterman, she released a string of hit singles and albums before taking greater creative control in the 1990s with the more experimental Impossible Princess (1997).
Her comeback began with Light Years (2000) and the single “Spinning Around,” followed by Fever (2001) and its worldwide hit “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.” In 2005 she was diagnosed with breast cancer and paused her career for treatment, returning to touring in 2006. Later albums included Aphrodite, Golden and the disco-inspired Disco (2020), before Tension (2023) and its single “Padam Padam,” which won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Dance Recording in 2024.
