Who Is Shawn Mendes?
Shawn Mendes is a Canadian pop singer-songwriter who became famous as a teenager through social media. After building a large following with short cover videos, he signed with Island Records and released a debut album that topped the Billboard 200. His songs blend pop, folk and rock influences, with his acoustic guitar often at the centre of the sound.
Mendes emerged in the same mid-2010s pop wave as fellow singer Sam Smith, and the two artists both moved from online buzz and debut-album success to long careers as arena headliners. Mendes is also known for his openness about anxiety and mental health, speaking candidly about the pressure of fame from a young age.
Shawn Mendes’s Early Life & Background
Shawn Mendes was born on August 8, 1998, in Pickering, Ontario, Canada, to Karen Mendes, a real estate agent, and Manuel Mendes, a businessman of Portuguese descent. He has a younger sister, Aaliyah. He grew up in Pickering, playing football and teaching himself guitar at the age of 13 by watching tutorial videos online.
In 2013, at 14, Mendes began posting six-second covers of popular songs on the video app Vine. His clips quickly gained millions of views, and he was discovered by artist manager Andrew Gertler, who helped him sign with Island Records. By the following year, he was releasing his own music and performing for crowds far larger than the bedroom where he had first filmed his covers.
Shawn Mendes’s Career
Mendes released his debut EP, The Shawn Mendes EP, in 2014, followed by his first studio album, Handwritten, in 2015. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and its single “Stitches” became a worldwide hit. He followed it with Illuminate (2016), featuring “Treat You Better,” and a self-titled third album in 2018, led by the anthemic “In My Blood.”
In 2019 he released “Señorita” with Camila Cabello, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. His fourth album, Wonder, followed in 2020. In July 2022, Mendes cancelled the rest of his world tour to focus on his mental health, a decision widely praised by fans. He returned in 2024 with his fifth album, Shawn, a more stripped-back, folk-influenced record, and a series of intimate live shows.
