Sam Smith’s Early Life & Background

Sam Smith was born on May 19, 1992, in London, England, and grew up in the Cambridgeshire village of Great Chishill. Their father, Frederick Smith, worked in business, and their mother, Kate Cassidy, was a banker. Smith began singing as a child, performing in jazz bands and taking part in Youth Music Theatre UK productions, where they gained early stage experience.

At school in Bishop’s Stortford, Smith studied music and performed in local venues, developing the vocal style that would later define their records. After leaving school, they moved to London to pursue music full time, working in bars and shops while writing songs and performing at open-mic nights. Their break came not as a solo artist at first, but as a featured vocalist on other people’s records.

Sam Smith’s Career
