Who Is Travis Scott?

Travis Scott is an American rapper and producer whose dark, melodic take on trap helped define the sound of hip-hop in the late 2010s. Working under the stage name he adopted as a teenager, he moved from uploading tracks online to headlining arenas, topping the Billboard 200 and shaping festival culture. His music blends heavy bass, Auto-Tuned melodies, psychedelic textures and guest verses from some of the biggest names in the genre.

Scott is also a businessman and cultural figure. Through Cactus Jack Records and his partnerships with Nike and other brands, he has turned his visual style — marked by earthy tones, desert imagery and the Astroworld theme park aesthetic — into a recognisable commercial world. Like Mark Wahlberg, who also began his entertainment career in music before building a wider business empire, Scott has used fame as a platform for ventures well beyond the recording studio.

Travis Scott’s Early Life & Background

Travis Scott was born on April 30, 1991, in Houston, Texas, and spent much of his childhood in nearby Missouri City. He was raised in part by his grandmother, who lived in the South Park neighbourhood of Houston, and he has often described those early years as formative, with music playing constantly around the house. He attended Elkins High School in Missouri City, where he began making beats and performing with friends.

After school, Scott enrolled at the University of Texas at San Antonio, studying briefly before leaving to pursue music full time. He moved to New York and then Los Angeles, sleeping on friends’ floors and working with local producers while he tried to get his songs heard. The gamble paid off when his early mixtapes drew attention from established artists, and he soon signed a publishing deal that opened the door to his first major-label work.

Travis Scott’s Career

Scott released his first mixtape, Owl Pharaoh, in 2013, followed by Days Before Rodeo in 2014. His debut studio album, Rodeo (2015), and its follow-up, Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight (2016), established him as a chart force, with the latter reaching number one on the Billboard 200. Along the way he became a sought-after collaborator, working with artists including Kanye West, Drake and Young Thug.

His breakthrough came with Astroworld in 2018, named after the defunct Houston theme park. The album debuted at number one, and its single “Sicko Mode,” featuring Drake, became his first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. He followed it with the compilation JackBoys in 2019 and the long-awaited Utopia in 2023, which also topped the charts and underlined his staying power across a decade at the top of rap.

Live performance has been central to Scott’s career, from the Astroworld Festival in Houston to headline slots at major festivals and a record-breaking run of arena shows. That mix of music, merchandise and live spectacle has put him in the same commercial conversation as crossover stars such as Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel, who have each turned a core career into a wider brand. His Cactus Jack label continues to develop new artists, while his sneaker and clothing collaborations regularly sell out within minutes.
