Who Is Roman Reigns?
Roman Reigns, whose real name is Leati Joseph Anoaʻi, is an American professional wrestler signed to WWE, where he performs on the Raw brand. He is the current World Heavyweight Champion in his first reign, and a four-time WWE Champion and two-time Universal Champion. Reigns is the 28th Triple Crown Champion and the 17th Grand Slam Champion in WWE history, and his 1,316-day Universal Championship reign from 2020 to 2024 was the longest in that title’s history and the fourth-longest world title reign in WWE history.
Known as “The Tribal Chief” during his dominant run at the top of WWE, Reigns is a member of the legendary Anoaʻi wrestling family. His combination of presence, athleticism and longevity has made him the defining star of the modern era, headlining multiple WrestleManias and carrying WWE’s biggest events.
Early Life & Background
Leati Joseph Anoaʻi was born on May 25, 1985, in Pensacola, Florida. He comes from the famed Anoaʻi family: his father was Sika Anoaʻi of the Wild Samoans, and his cousins include The Usos and The Rock. Reigns played football at Georgia Tech from 2003 to 2006, earning first-team All-ACC honors in 2006.
After going undrafted in 2007, Reigns spent time with the Minnesota Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL offseason and played for the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League in 2008, appearing in five games. It was during his Vikings physical in 2007 that he was first diagnosed with leukemia, a battle he would later reveal publicly in 2018 before announcing his remission in February 2019.
Career & Journey
Reigns signed with WWE in 2010 and rose through its developmental system before debuting on the main roster on November 18, 2012, at Survivor Series as part of The Shield alongside Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins. The trio dominated WWE for two years, and Reigns won the WWE Tag Team Championship with Rollins before the group split in 2014.
As a singles star, Reigns won his first Royal Rumble in 2015 and went on to win the WWE Championship four times, headlining WrestleMania against Brock Lesnar, Triple H and The Undertaker. In October 2018, he announced that his leukemia had returned and relinquished the Universal Championship, returning four months later in remission to one of the loudest ovations of his career.
Reigns’ second act as “The Tribal Chief” began in August 2020 and became one of the greatest runs in wrestling history. He held the Universal Championship for 1,316 days, the longest reign in that title’s history and the longest world title reign in WWE since 1988, before losing it at WrestleMania 40 in 2024. He won his second Royal Rumble in 2026 and captured the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 42 in April 2026.
Reigns’ current reign has collided with Sami Zayn’s. On the November 2, 2026 episode of Raw, after newcomer Cruz Montana joined the faction known as The 946 and laid out Reigns, Zayn delivered a Helluva Kick to the World Heavyweight Champion. The two champions meet at Crown Jewel on November 7, 2026, in a Champion vs. Champion match, with Survivor Series: WarGames on November 28, 2026, on the horizon.
