Who Is Ali Krieger?
Ali Krieger is an American former professional soccer player who made more than 100 appearances for the United States women’s national team between 2008 and 2021. A defender known for her positioning, work rate and composure on the ball, she won the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015 in Canada and again in 2019 in France, and she represented the United States at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. At club level, she played in Germany, Sweden and the United States, finishing her playing career as captain of NJ/NY Gotham FC’s 2023 National Women’s Soccer League championship team.
Since retiring from playing, Krieger has moved into broadcasting as the host of ESPN’s women’s soccer show Futbol W. In 2026, she returned to the spotlight in a very different kind of competition, joining The Amazing Race season 39 with Joanna Lohman, a former Washington Spirit teammate. The pair were billed on the show as pro athletes and moms, and they entered the race as one of its most experienced teams when it comes to performing under pressure.
Early Life & Background
Alexandra Blaire Krieger was born on July 28, 1984, in Dumfries, Virginia, and grew up in the Washington, D.C. area. Her father played professional soccer and coached in Virginia, and Krieger followed her older brother Kyle into the game, playing youth soccer for the Prince William Sparklers from the age of seven. She attended Forest Park High School in Woodbridge, Virginia, where she was a three-year team captain.
Krieger then played college soccer at Penn State University from 2003 to 2006, where she was a first-team All-American as both a midfielder and a defender and was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 2006. A broken leg cut short her 2005 college season, an early test of the resilience that later defined her professional career. After college, she moved to Germany to join 1. FFC Frankfurt, where she won the league title, the national cup and the UEFA Women’s Cup in her first season in 2007-08.
Career/Journey
Krieger’s senior international debut for the United States came in January 2008, and she went on to earn 108 caps. She played every minute of the 2011 Women’s World Cup as the United States reached the final, started every match of the triumphant 2015 campaign, and made three appearances as the team defended its title in 2019. She was the oldest first-time Olympian in United States women’s soccer history when she went to Rio in 2016.
Her club career took her from Frankfurt to the Washington Spirit, Orlando Pride and, finally, Gotham FC, where she captained the side to the 2023 NWSL Championship in her final season before retirement. She was named to the NWSL Best XI four times. Off the field, she has worked with charities including MiracleFeet and Athlete Ally, and she earned a U.S. Soccer coaching license after the 2018 season.
On The Amazing Race 39, which premiered on CBS on September 30, 2026, Krieger and Lohman race as a team of former professional athletes. The season, hosted by Phil Keoghan, sends 13 teams across five continents, and the soccer pair’s fitness, teamwork and experience of high-stakes competition have made them one of the season’s most talked-about teams as the race airs on Wednesday nights.
