Who Is Jeremy Allen White?

Jeremy Allen White is an American actor who spent a decade as one of television’s most reliable young performers before The Bear made him a star. As Lip Gallagher in Shameless (2011–2021), he played the brilliant, self-destructive eldest Gallagher brother across 134 episodes, earning a Critics’ Choice nomination. As Carmy Berzatto in The Bear (2022–2026), a gifted chef who returns to Chicago to run his late brother’s sandwich shop, he has won two Emmy Awards, three Golden Globes, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Critics’ Choice Awards.

White’s film career has grown just as fast: the wrestling drama The Iron Claw (2023), in which he played Kerry Von Erich, and Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere (2025), in which he played Bruce Springsteen and earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor. In January 2024 he became a global ambassador for Calvin Klein underwear, and his first campaign generated $12.7 million in media exposure in 48 hours. White’s rise mirrors that of fellow award-winning actors such as Barry Keoghan and Colin Farrell.

Jeremy Allen White’s Early Life & Background

Jeremy Allen White was born on February 17, 1991, in Brooklyn, New York City, to Eloise Zeigler and Richard White, both former actors; his mother is from North Carolina. He has a younger sister, Annabelle. The family moved to Manhattan when he was young, and he grew up in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood of Brooklyn. As a child he was a dancer, training in ballet, jazz and tap at elementary school, and he performed in theatre productions before deciding at thirteen to pursue acting seriously.

White attended the Professional Performing Arts School (PPAS) in Hell’s Kitchen, where he met his future wife, Addison Timlin. He also worked at the casting office of Susan Shopmaker, and he has said he skipped so many classes that he did not earn enough credits to graduate — although he was eventually awarded his high school diploma at the age of 34. His first screen roles came in 2006, in the film Beautiful Ohio and an episode of Conviction, and he played a young man in Afterschool (2008) alongside Timlin.

Jeremy Allen White’s Career

White’s early career included a small role in The Speed of Life (2007), which won the Queer Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and three different characters across three episodes of Law & Order and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. His breakthrough came in 2011, when he was cast as Lip Gallagher in Showtime’s Shameless, a role he played for eleven seasons until 2021. During that run he appeared in Rob the Mob (2014), After Everything (2018) and The Rental (2020), and in the film Fingernails (2023).

The Bear (2022–2026) transformed White into one of the most decorated actors on television: as Carmy Berzatto he won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 2023 and 2024, three Golden Globes, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Critics’ Choice Awards. In January 2024 he became a global ambassador for Calvin Klein underwear. He played Kerry Von Erich in The Iron Claw (2023), and took on his biggest film role yet as Bruce Springsteen in Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere (2025), for which he took vocal lessons and learned guitar, playing a 1955 Gibson J-200 that Springsteen gave him.

White’s recent work includes voicing Rotta the Hutt in The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026), the fifth season of The Bear, which premiered on June 25, 2026, and The Social Reckoning (2026), in which he plays Facebook whistleblower Jeff Horwitz. He is filming The Painted Bride in Poland and is attached to Enemies, an A24 thriller co-starring Austin Butler. He married Addison Timlin in a Beverly Hills courthouse ceremony on October 18, 2019; the couple, who met in high school at fourteen, separated in 2022 and Timlin filed for divorce in May 2023. They have two daughters, born in 2018 and 2020.
