Who Is Vin Diesel?

Vin Diesel is an American actor and filmmaker whose deep voice, physical presence and loyalty to long-running franchises have made him one of the most bankable action stars in Hollywood. Born Mark Sinclair Vincent, he adopted the stage name Vin Diesel while working as a nightclub bouncer in New York, and he has carried it through a career that now spans more than 35 years.

Diesel is best known as Dominic Toretto, the street-racer-turned-family-man at the center of the Fast & Furious films, a role he has played since the first film in 2001. He is also the voice of Groot in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers films, a part built almost entirely on three words, and the star of the Riddick science-fiction series. Away from acting, he runs the production company One Race Films and has worked as a writer, director and producer.

Vin Diesel’s Early Life & Background

Vin Diesel was born on July 18, 1967, in Alameda, California, and raised in New York City by his mother, Delora Sherleen Vincent, an astrologer, and his adoptive father, Irving H. Vincent, an acting instructor. He has a fraternal twin brother, Paul, and has said he never met his biological father. Diesel has described himself as being of ambiguous ethnicity, and his mother has Scottish roots.

Diesel made his stage debut at the age of seven, appearing in the children’s play Dinosaur Door at Theater for the New City in Greenwich Village after he and some friends broke into the theatre. He stayed involved in theatre through adolescence and later studied creative writing at Hunter College in New York, where he began writing screenplays. To support himself while chasing acting work, he worked as a bouncer at the Tunnel nightclub, where he started using the name Vin Diesel — Vin from his mother’s married name, Vincent, and Diesel because friends said he was always full of energy.

Vin Diesel’s Career

Diesel’s first film role was an uncredited appearance as an orderly in Awakenings (1990). After years of struggling to land parts, he made his own short film, Multi-Facial (1995), a semi-autobiographical story about a multiracial actor stuck in the audition process, and followed it with his debut feature, Strays (1997). Director Steven Spielberg saw Multi-Facial and cast him as Private Adrian Caparzo in Saving Private Ryan (1998), his first major Hollywood role. He then voiced the title character in the animated classic The Iron Giant (1999).

Diesel became a leading action star with Pitch Black (2000), in which he first played the anti-hero Riddick, and The Fast and the Furious (2001), where he originated Dominic Toretto. He headlined xXx (2002) as Xander Cage, showed a comic side in The Pacifier (2005), and returned to the Fast & Furious series in 2009, leading it through Fast Five (2011), Furious 7 (2015), The Fate of the Furious (2017), F9 (2021) and Fast X (2023). He also reprised Riddick in The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) and Riddick (2013), with a fourth film, Riddick: Furya, announced in 2023.

Alongside his live-action work, Diesel has voiced Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and its sequels, Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), as well as the Disney+ shorts series I Am Groot. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2013, founded the production company One Race Films, the record label Racetrack Records and the video game developer Tigon Studios, and even released a debut single, “Feel Like I Do,” with Kygo in 2020.
