Aubrey Drake Graham was born on October 24, 1986, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to Dennis Graham, an African-American drummer from Memphis, Tennessee, and Sandi Graham, a Canadian educator of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage. He was raised in Toronto, in the Forest Hill neighbourhood, by his mother after his parents divorced when he was five. He attended school at Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, then Vaughan Road Academy, where he played the trumpet in the school band.

At 15, Drake was cast as Jimmy Brooks, a basketball star who is shot and paralyzed, in the Canadian teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation. He appeared in the series from 2001 to 2008, and his pay from the show supported his family. While acting, he began recording music, releasing his debut mixtape, Room for Improvement, in 2006. His third mixtape, So Far Gone (2009), was a breakthrough, and it led to a deal with Young Money Entertainment, the label founded by Lil Wayne.
