Early Life & Background
Keanu Charles Reeves was born on September 2, 1964, in Beirut, Lebanon, to Patricia Taylor, an English costume designer, and Samuel Nowlin Reeves, an American geologist. His first name means “cool breeze over the mountains” in Hawaiian, from his father’s family background. Reeves lived in Sydney, New York and Toronto as a child, and was raised mainly in Toronto, Canada, where he became a Canadian citizen.
Reeves attended several high schools in Toronto, including De La Salle College, and was a successful ice hockey goalkeeper, which earned him the nickname “The Wall”. He also struggled with dyslexia, which made school difficult, and he was expelled from one school for being, in his words, “just a little too rambunctious”. At 17, he left school and worked as a production assistant and in a pasta shop while he pursued acting, landing roles in Canadian television and theatre before moving to Los Angeles in 1986.
Keanu Reeves’s Career
Reeves made his film debut in Youngblood (1986) and his first notable role in River’s Edge (1986). His breakthrough came with Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989) and its sequel Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (1991), in which he played the good-natured time traveller Ted Logan. He was praised for his dramatic work in My Own Private Idaho (1991), then became a box-office action star in Point Break (1991) and Speed (1994), opposite Sandra Bullock.
In 1999, The Matrix made Reeves a global superstar as Neo, a hacker who discovers that reality is a computer simulation. He returned for three sequels, most recently The Matrix Resurrections (2021), and became one of the most recognizable action heroes in film. He also starred in the romantic drama Sweet November (2001), the supernatural thriller Constantine (2005) and the drama The Lake House (2006), again with Sandra Bullock.
After a period in which his career slowed, Reeves returned to the top with John Wick (2014), in which he played a retired hitman seeking revenge. The film became a surprise hit and spawned the sequels John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017), John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), all praised for their inventive action. He also voiced Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4 (2019), appeared in Always Be My Maybe (2019), and played the villain in the film Good Fortune (2025). In 2025 he made his Broadway debut in Waiting for Godot opposite Alex Winter.
