Who Is Joe Milton?
Joe Milton is an American professional football quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. A 6 ft 5 in passer known for his powerful throwing arm, he played college football at Michigan and Tennessee before the New England Patriots selected him in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL draft.
Milton spent his first two professional seasons as a backup, moving from New England to the Dallas Cowboys and then to Philadelphia. His chance finally arrived in November 2026, when the Eagles signed him off the Cowboys’ practice squad in October and then named him their starter for Week 9 against the New York Giants, replacing Tanner McKee after the team’s Week 8 loss to the Washington Commanders.
Early Life & Background
Joseph Jay Milton III was born on March 6, 2000, in Pahokee, Florida, a small town in Palm Beach County with a proud football tradition. He starred at Pahokee High School, where his size and arm strength made him one of the most sought-after quarterback recruits in the country. Rated a five-star prospect, he committed to the University of Michigan, arriving in Ann Arbor in 2018.
At Michigan, Milton spent his first two seasons as a backup, learning behind starter Shea Patterson. He opened the pandemic-shortened 2020 season as the Wolverines’ starting quarterback, but he was replaced during the season by Cade McNamara. With his path to the starting job blocked, he entered the transfer portal and moved to the University of Tennessee in 2021.
Career & Journey
Milton’s Tennessee career began with promise and frustration in equal measure. He started the Volunteers’ first two games of the 2021 season before an injury against Pittsburgh opened the door for Hendon Hooker, who kept the job. Milton served as Hooker’s backup through the 2022 season, waiting patiently for his turn, and finally became Tennessee’s full-time starter in 2023.
His strong arm and physical tools earned him a shot in the NFL. The New England Patriots selected him in the sixth round of the 2024 draft, 193rd overall. He spent his rookie season as a backup and made his NFL debut in the 2024 season finale against the Buffalo Bills. In April 2025, the Patriots traded him to the Dallas Cowboys, where he again served as a reserve.
The Cowboys waived Milton on August 31, 2026, and signed him to their practice squad two days later. His fortunes changed on October 16, 2026, when the Philadelphia Eagles signed him off the Cowboys’ practice squad after an injury to starting quarterback Jalen Hurts. Then, following the Eagles’ Week 8 loss to the Washington Commanders, head coach Nick Sirianni named Milton the starter for Week 9 against the New York Giants, giving the 26-year-old his first career start in the NFL, as reported by CBS Sports on November 4, 2026.
