Who Is Sami Zayn?
Sami Zayn, whose real name is Rami Sebei, is a Canadian professional wrestler signed to WWE, where he performs on the SmackDown brand. A two-time Undisputed WWE Champion, four-time Intercontinental Champion, two-time United States Champion and former Undisputed Tag Team Champion, Zayn is the 36th Triple Crown Champion and the 26th Grand Slam Champion in WWE history. He regained the Undisputed WWE Championship on September 11, 2026, defeating CM Punk on SmackDown.
Zayn is beloved for his underdog spirit, his elastic in-ring style and his gift for storytelling. Few wrestlers have reinvented themselves as often or as successfully: from a masked luchador who never spoke, to a plucky babyface chasing his first title, to the “Honorary Uce” of The Bloodline, to the world champion standing across from Roman Reigns at Crown Jewel.
Early Life & Background
Rami Sebei was born on July 12, 1984, in Laval, Quebec, Canada. His parents were Syrian migrants from Homs who relocated to Laval in the 1970s. Zayn grew up in Quebec and is fluent in English, Arabic and French, a trilingual background that has shaped both his wrestling promos and his humanitarian work.
Zayn made his professional wrestling debut on March 1, 2002, under the name Stevie McFly. He soon adopted the masked persona El Generico, a good-natured luchador who became a cult favorite on the independent circuit. For more than a decade, he protected the secret of his identity, wrestling across North America and the world before signing with WWE in January 2013.
Career & Journey
After signing with WWE in January 2013, Sebei debuted in NXT as Sami Zayn and quickly became one of the brand’s cornerstones. He won the NXT Championship on December 11, 2014, and moved to the main roster in 2015, where he collected Intercontinental and United States titles and built a reputation as one of the company’s most reliable big-match performers.
Zayn’s career reached new heights in 2022 when he joined The Bloodline as its “Honorary Uce,” a comedy role that became one of the most popular acts in wrestling. The run ended at the 2023 Royal Rumble, and at WrestleMania 39 Zayn and Kevin Owens defeated The Usos in the main event to win the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship, one of the most celebrated moments of the decade.
In 2026, Zayn finally reached the top of WWE as a singles star. He won his first world championship on June 27, 2026, at Night of Champions, defeating Cody Rhodes and Gunther in a triple threat match. He lost the title nine days later to CM Punk on Raw, but regained it on September 11, 2026, on SmackDown, and has since retained it against Owens, Je’Von Evans and Trick Williams.
Zayn’s current reign has put him on a collision course with Roman Reigns. On the November 2, 2026 episode of Raw, after Cruz Montana joined The 946 and the faction laid out Reigns, Zayn delivered a Helluva Kick to the World Heavyweight Champion. The two champions meet at Crown Jewel on November 7, 2026, in a Champion vs. Champion match, with Survivor Series: WarGames on November 28 looming beyond it.
